Bridges last link in loop

PARRY SOUND - The completion of the French River and Pickerel River snowmobiler bridges in 2004 has opened new opportunities for marketing trails and regions under the slogan "Do the Loop".

“In 2003 the snowmobile associations that reside in the three communities, Sudbury, Parry Sound and North Bay, recognizing that snowmobile traffic is going to increase greatly with these bridges,” said Parry Sound Snowmobile District general manager Sean Evans. “A lot of people are going to want to come into our area, perhaps for the first time and explore our districts.”

Self-guided tour

That is where the idea of promoting a self-guided tour was started. A 380-kilometre loop that connects the three communities where the Parry Sound District Snowmobile club, Sudbury Trail Plan and Near North Trail Association, maintains trails was identified along with 800 kilometres of side trails.

Added attraction

Not only do the bridges over the French and Pickerel rivers omit the need for snowmobiles to be shuttled by truck or trailer over the rivers’ highway bridges, but they are an attraction themselves, architecturally.

The bridges are at least two of the longest in the world for snowmobiles.

The French River bridge, completed September 2004, is 153.6 metres long and is 27 metres above the water.

The Pickerel River bridge, completed November 2001, is 128.7 metres long.
